I read this book for the Gotta Have Paranormal Romance with a Kick group's newbies vs vets challenge. I loved this story. The beginning made me think of Hunger Games meets Mulan. All the eligible people standing in a line with their parents hoping they get the honor to be chosen.
At first I thought this would be a story similar to Scheherazade where the woman woos the king by entertaining him. I was wrong. It's much more than that. I really liked Ashland. She was not afraid to make her thoughts known and she was very funny.
The ending of this book reminded me of something Brandon Sanderson's books. Well, it is fantasy after all. Altogether it was a very enjoyable quick read. Although it was quick I didn't feel like anything in the story was lacking.
